Strategic Aim

Following a national search, Wake Forest University selected Atlanta-based Carter and Winston-Salem based Front Street Capital (C/FSC) to lead a transformative project on 80+ acres of University-owned land surrounding its major sports and entertainment venues. The overall area includes Wake Forest’s intercollegiate Tennis Center, Couch Ballpark, Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as well as the city owned Carolina Classic Fairgrounds and Fairgrounds Arena. These facilities aggregate to the largest sports and entertainment venues in the state of North Carolina west of Greensboro and north of Charlotte, with average total annual attendance of 750,000 patrons for more than 260 yearly event dates.

This significant initiative—which includes leveraging best-in-class partners and boosting the local economy during the construction phase and beyond—supports Wake Forest University’s commitment to fostering a Community of Partnerships (Thematic Goal 3) and reinforcing its role as a leading collaborator in Winston-Salem’s economic development (Aim 3.3). The vision for the development is to create a mix of commercial and residential spaces designed to benefit and welcome Winston-Salem residents, the University, visitors, and the entire region. The new district will elevate the entertainment and athletic event attendee experience, but also be active year-round with new dining, shopping, and recreational offerings.

In alignment with the Strategic Framework and commitment to collaboration as well as economic development, C/FSC has already conducted more than 100 individual and small group conversations to ensure the project serves the best interests of the entire community. Residents, business owners, neighborhood leaders, university staff, alumni, students, and local nonprofits have had a voice in shaping the vision for the redevelopment. Through this collaborative effort, C/FSC and Wake Forest University are poised to create a revitalized district that fosters a thriving economic environment for all.

The project is also the recipient of $35 million in state infrastructure funding. This grant, in partnership with the State of North Carolina and City of Winston Salem, will cover much needed horizontal infrastructure enhancements for the area and exemplifies a proactive approach to supporting the region’s economic development, as aligned with Aim 3.3.

Future updates will detail the project’s continued progress.
